AI人工智能方興未艾,行業領頭羊OpenAI行政總裁Sam Altman早前獲《Times》時代雜誌評為2023年度首席執行官,被形容為一個具罕見的戰略才能、野心和韌性的天才,而他本人走過高山低谷的2023後,近日他事隔一年以題為「希望有人一早話我知呢啲說話」(What I Wish Someone Had Told Me)為題發文分享17個經驗之談。

Optimism, obsession, self-belief, raw horsepower and personal connections are how things get started. - 具有凝聚力的團隊、冷靜和緊迫感適度結合、超乎常理的投入是達成目標的關鍵。遠見是稀罕的,嘗試別擔心外界的短期看法,時間會令事情變易。
Cohesive teams, the right combination of calmness and urgency, and unreasonable commitment are how things get finished. Long-term orientation is in short supply; try not to worry about what people think in the short term, which will get easier over time. - 對於一個團隊來說,做一件真正重要的困難事情,容易過做一件不太重要的輕鬆事。大膽的想法能激勵人心。
It is easier for a team to do a hard thing that really matters than to do an easy thing that doesn’t really matter; audacious ideas motivate people. - 激勵是超能力,謹慎控制。
Incentives are superpowers; set them carefully. - 將資源集中在少數高信念的賭注上;這點知易行難。你能捨棄的事物遠超自己想像。
Concentrate your resources on a small number of high-conviction bets; this is easy to say but evidently hard to do. You can delete more stuff than you think. - 清晰、簡潔地溝通。

Fight bullshit and bureaucracy every time you see it and get other people to fight it too. Do not let the org chart get in the way of people working productively together. - 結果是最重要的事;別讓良好的過程成為不佳結果的藉口。
Outcomes are what count; don’t let good process excuse bad results. - 花多點時間進行招聘。為那些潛力高、進步迅速的人才承擔風險。除了智力,還要看實際工作的證據。
Spend more time recruiting. Take risks on high-potential people with a fast rate of improvement. Look for evidence of getting stuff done in addition to intelligence. - 超級巨星的價值遠高於表象,但你必須根據他們對組織績效的淨影響來作評估對方。

至於《Times》的編採團隊與Sam Altman身邊超過20個人進行訪談後,指很多人將Sam Altman配以「和藹可親」、「聰明」、「非常有動力」等形容詞,並且擅於團結投資者和研究人員,但有四個與Altman多年合作的人指出,Sam Altman有時會表現得狡猾,甚至顯得虛偽及具欺騙性。
至於近月的OpenAI 董事會「兵變」,有熟悉董事局的人表示,Sam Altman擅於操縱人心,有時會不誠實地讓人們覺得他同意他們的觀點,但實際上並非如此,而認為這種行為模式是Sam Altman為集中權力作出的努力。
有受訪者表示,「Sam Altman在很多方面是一個真正好的人,而非邪惡的天才。如果他是一個可怕的人,這個故事(OpenAI兵變)會更容易表達……Sam Altman關心使命、關心他人、關心人類。但如果你看Sam Altman的行為,就會清楚地看到一個明顯的模式:他極度地追求權力。」
Y Combinator聯合創辦人Paul Graham稱當年在年僅23歲的Sam Altman身上看到戰略才能、野心和韌性的結合(rare blend of strategic talent, ambition, and tenacity),「你可以把將Sam Altman空降到一個充滿食人族的島上,五年後他會成為國王回來」,所以在2014年Sam Altman任命為Y Combinator的總裁。
